Morocco's enthronement anniversary coins have been issued with some regularity since Mohammed VI's accession in July 1999, following the death of Hassan II after 38 years on the throne. The sixteenth anniversary fell in 2015, a year of considerable domestic tension — the aftermath of the 2011 Arab Spring protests had pushed Mohammed VI toward constitutional reforms that nominally curtailed royal authority, though critics argued the changes left the Palace's practical power largely intact. That political backdrop gives these commemorative issues a quietly charged quality that the official packaging never acknowledges.
