Issued to mark the 24th anniversary of Mohammed VI's accession, which followed the death of Hassan II on 23 July 1999 — a succession that ended a 38-year reign and came at a moment of significant political pressure for reform in Morocco. Mohammed VI moved quickly to distance himself from his father's repressive security apparatus, disbanding the feared cabinet of Interior Minister Driss Basri within months of taking the throne.
