Issued to commemorate the 1,200th anniversary of the Idrisid dynasty's founding of Morocco as a unified Islamic state, this piece marks the reign of Idris I, who established the kingdom at Volubilis around 788 AD after fleeing the Abbasid massacre at the Battle of Fakhkh. The Alaoui dynasty, to which Mohammed VI belongs, traces its legitimacy through an unbroken Sharifian lineage — descent from the Prophet — rather than directly from the Idrisids, making the commemorative framing as much a political statement about dynastic continuity as a historical one.
