John Paul II visited The Gambia in February 1992 as part of a four-nation African tour that also included Senegal, Guinea, and Angola. It was a brief stop — the papal itinerary allotted less than a day to Banjul — but the Central Bank moved quickly to issue a commemorative, as several African governments did during his continental tours of the 1980s and 1990s. The resulting gold struck by The Gambia was among the heavier commemorative issues from the region.
