Struck to commemorate the annual meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank held in El Salvador in 1977, this issue belongs to a wave of Central American commemorative gold coinage produced through the 1970s as regional governments sought hard-currency revenue from collector markets rather than domestic circulation. The IADB meeting that year drew particular attention given the bank's expanding role in financing infrastructure across the isthmus during a decade of significant political instability throughout the region.
Mintage was extremely limited, as was standard for Salvadoran commemorative gold of the period.
