Rantau Prapat was a town in East Sumatra, and in 1948 it was operating well outside the monetary framework being assembled in Yogyakarta. This note is one of several emergency regional issues produced during the Indonesian National Revolution, when Dutch military operations had fragmented Republican-controlled territory into pockets that sometimes printed their own paper to keep local economies functioning. The Treasury designation here is loose — these were essentially ad hoc issues under regional civilian authority, not central government instruments.

The denomination itself signals acute inflationary pressure at the time of issue.
