Poland's Constitutional Tribunal was established in 1985 under the late Polish People's Republic — a somewhat paradoxical institution, since a genuinely independent constitutional review body had little place in a one-party state. It acquired real authority only after 1989, and its first decade of post-communist operation is arguably what this coin actually commemorates. The Tribunal became a flashpoint again in 2015–2016, when a constitutional crisis over its composition drew international condemnation, giving this 2010 anniversary issue an unintended retrospective weight.
