South Ossetia has no internationally recognized monetary system — it uses the Russian ruble in practice — and the "National Bank of South Ossetia" issues no legal tender accepted anywhere. These pieces are produced for the collector market and carry no genuine monetary authority. The Victory commemoration framing references the Soviet role in defeating Nazi Germany, a narrative that carries particular political weight in the region given South Ossetia's alignment with Moscow following the 2008 war with Georgia.
