South Ossetia occupies one of the more unusual positions in modern numismatics: a partially recognized state whose coins are legal tender nowhere with functioning commerce, produced entirely for the collector market. The National Bank of South Ossetia has issued commemorative silver since the mid-2000s, operating under Russian political backing following the 2008 war with Georgia. Maharbek Tuganov was an Ossetian artist and ethnographer born in 1873, known for documenting Ossetian folk culture and mythology in paintings that remain foundational to the region's cultural identity.
