South Ossetia has no internationally recognized monetary system — it uses the Russian ruble in practice, and its "National Bank" issues no currency with actual legal tender status outside the territory itself. These silver pieces are produced for the collector market, with KM# 10 placing this issue within a small but consistent series of numismatic releases tied to South Ossetian statehood claims following the 2008 war with Georgia, after which Russia recognized the breakaway region's independence.
