The legend Au 1/20z .999 is inscribed in the left field of the gold centre, and the denomination 25元 appears at the lower portion of the gold disc. The surrounding silver (.999) ring is engraved with Chinese text describing the gold and silver fineness and weight specifications, with the date 1994 centered at the base of the ring. |

The bimetallic Panda series was introduced in 1994 as a technical showpiece at a moment when Chinese sovereign bullion coinage was still establishing its international footing. The gold-in-silver format was ambitious for its time — few mints outside Europe were producing bimetallic precious-metal collector issues with this level of compositional precision.
Two KM references (626 and 702) reflect cataloging disputes over whether certain 1994 bimetallic Pandas were struck for proof sets versus individual release — a distinction that affected official mintage figures and has never been cleanly resolved in the standard references.
