Mazu, the sea goddess venerated across Fujian, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora, has a cult origin traceable to a Song dynasty woman named Lin Mo, believed to have died around 987 AD. The People's Bank issued this coin during a period of intense cross-strait economic activity, when Taiwan-based manufacturers were pouring investment into Fujian — Mazu's home province — at an unprecedented rate. The timing was hardly accidental.
The 1995 issue is part of a broader Mazu gold series that ran across several years in small mintages aimed squarely at the collector market in Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia.
