The Kuan Yin gold series ran from 1990 through 2000, issued annually by the People's Bank of China and struck at the Shanghai and Shenzhen mints. The 1995 issue was produced during a period of rapid expansion in Chinese bullion coinage, as the PBC was aggressively developing international collector markets — particularly in Southeast Asia, where Kuan Yin holds deep devotional significance that translated directly into collector demand.
Unlike the Panda series, mintage figures for the Kuan Yin issues were never consistently disclosed, complicating population estimates to this day.
