The Forbidden City gold series, issued through the late 1990s by the People's Bank of China, coincided with a period of aggressive expansion in Chinese commemorative coin programs following the commercial success of the Panda series. The "Approach" piece is one of several architectural vignette issues from 1997 tied to the 600th anniversary celebrations of the Forbidden City's construction, begun under the Yongle Emperor in 1406 and completed in 1420.
Chinese gold commemoratives of this vintage were distributed primarily through overseas dealers and the China Gold Coin Corporation, with domestic circulation essentially nonexistent.
