Galatasaray was founded in 1905 by Ali Sami Yen, a student at the Galatasaray High School in Istanbul, making 2005 the club's centennial. Turkey's sports commemorative series of this period was issued through the Darphane under the broader push to showcase Turkish cultural institutions ahead of EU accession negotiations, which formally opened in October of that same year.
