Issued under the umbrella of the global Save the Children Fund campaign, this coin was part of a wave of commemorative silver issues produced by smaller nations in the late 1980s — many struck by foreign mints on contract and sold almost entirely into the collector market rather than circulated domestically. Mongolia's economy in 1989 was still operating as a Soviet satellite state under the Mongolian People's Republic, making the hard currency generated by numismatic exports a quiet but meaningful source of foreign exchange.
