The International Year of the Child was declared by the UN General Assembly for 1979, prompting a wave of commemorative issues from member states. Mongolia's participation was notable — the Mongolian People's Republic rarely issued collector coinage, and piedfort versions were virtually unheard of from Soviet-aligned states at this date. A piedfort, struck at double the normal planchet thickness, was a format historically associated with French royal proof issues; its appearance here reflects the growing 1970s market for premium numismatic products sold through Western coin dealers for hard currency.
KM#P1 designation confirms this as the first piedfort recorded for Mongolia.
