Issued under the Soviet-aligned Mongolian People's Republic to mark the United Nations' International Year of the Child (1979), this coin was struck one year after the official IYC designation — a common lag for commemorative programs dependent on foreign minting facilities. Mongolia had no domestic capacity for silver coinage at the time and relied on external production, which accounts for the two catalog variants: KM#39.1 and KM#39.2 differ in edge treatment, a distinction that occasionally arose when dies were produced or finished at different facilities in separate runs.
