Samoa's participation in the Sydney 2000 Olympics was modest — a handful of athletes across weightlifting and boxing — but the commemorative program surrounding it was prolific. This gold issue is struck in 14-karat alloy, an unusual fineness chosen largely to bring the production cost within reach of a broader collector market without sacrificing the "gold coin" designation.
Tanumafili II held the position of O le Ao o le Malo — head of state — from 1963 until his death in 2007, making him one of the longest-serving heads of state in Pacific history at the time of this coin's issue.
