Obverse description Central field displays the crowned quartered arms of Groningen, the shield divided into four quarters bearing alternating civic emblems including eagles and diagonal barry lozengy bands, surmounted by an ornate open crown with foliate supporters. Surrounding the shield is a beaded inner circle with the Latin siege legend distributed around the circumference. The date 1672 appears in the upper portion of the legend, flanked by the denomination numeral 25 to the left and the abbreviation ST to the right, with the remainder of the inscription TEMPORE OBSIDIONIS completing the circuit. The whole design is struck on an irregularly shaped square klippe flan with bevelled corners, characteristic of hastily produced emergency coinage.
