The 1951 Bulgarian coinage series was issued in the immediate aftermath of the country's currency reform of 1952 — or rather, in anticipation of it. These coins were struck and stockpiled before the reform wiped out old lev holdings at punishing exchange rates, a Soviet-model monetary restructuring designed to neutralize black-market wealth accumulated during and after the war. Circulation was brief almost by design.
