The Universala Esperanto-Asocio, founded in 1908 and headquartered in Rotterdam, issued a series of fantasy pieces denominated in steloj — the Esperanto word for stars — as promotional tokens rather than any functioning currency. No nation has ever officially adopted Esperanto, so these pieces exist entirely outside any monetary system, struck for ideological solidarity rather than exchange.
The X# prefix in the Krause catalog designates it as a non-circulating fantasy or promotional issue. The 1965 date places it within a period of renewed Esperanto activism during the Cold War, when the movement positioned itself as a politically neutral lingua franca.
