Reverse description A full-colour applied depiction of an ostrich (Struthio camelus) dominates the central field, rendered in naturalistic multicolour tones showing the bird in a forward-leaning posture amid tall savannah grasses, set against a blue sky background. The coloured scene is contained within a raised circular border that separates it from the outer ring. The legend 'WILDLIFE OF SOMALIA & EAST AFRICA' arcs around the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the date '1998' appears at the base of the outer ring, flanked by raised dots.

Additional information

Somalia's 1990s wildlife coinage was issued during one of the most complete state collapses in modern African history — by 1998, the central government had ceased to function entirely, and the Somali National Bank existed in name only. These coins were almost certainly produced under contract by a foreign mint and never saw meaningful circulation within Somalia itself, making them effectively fantasy issues marketed to the collector trade rather than instruments of domestic commerce.
