Somalia's 1990s wildlife coinage was produced almost entirely for the collector export market — by 1998, the country had no functioning central bank and the Somali shilling had effectively ceased to exist as a practical currency. These pieces were licensed through private minting arrangements and never meaningfully circulated within Somalia itself.
