Somalia's post-1991 coinage is complicated by the near-total collapse of central authority following the fall of Siad Barre's government. The Central Bank of Somalia continued issuing coins nominally, but without a functioning state behind them — most pieces from this period were produced by foreign mints for export sale to collectors rather than for domestic circulation. This issue almost certainly never passed through Somali hands in trade.
