Somalia issued this piece under a broader late-1990s program of thematic coinage produced almost entirely for the collector export market — the country had no functioning central government at the time, the Somali National Bank effectively non-operational following the state's collapse in 1991. The licensing arrangements behind these issues remain opaque, with production almost certainly contracted to a European mint and distribution handled through third-party numismatic wholesalers.
The Hanseatic cog itself was the dominant cargo vessel of northern European trade from roughly the 12th through 15th centuries, its design optimized for the shallow, stormy waters of the Baltic and North Sea routes.
