Somalia's Central Bank issued a series of foreign-personality commemoratives around 2000 that had no meaningful connection to Somali history — Che Guevara among them. These were produced explicitly for the collector export market, not for domestic circulation, at a time when Somalia had no functioning central government. The "Central Bank of Somalia" attribution on such issues is largely nominal; the coins were contracted through private minting intermediaries and sold directly into the novelty numismatic trade.
