Somalia's 1990s commemorative program was a straightforward revenue exercise — the country had no functioning central government following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in 1991, yet coins continued to be contracted through foreign mints and sold directly into the collector market. The Niña was the smallest of Columbus's three 1492 vessels, a caravel of roughly 60 tons, and survived two Atlantic crossings — the second in 1493 as part of the return expedition.
