| Beschrijving keerzijde | A vibrant multicolor depiction of the 15th-century Spanish caravel Niña under full sail occupies the central field, rendered in polychrome enamel against a stylized sea, with the vessel shown in three-quarter starboard view with billowing square and lateen sails. The legend 'CARAVEL EXPLORER 'NIÑA'' appears in curved lettering above the ship within the color insert, and the date '1490' is inscribed below the vessel in the exergue of the insert. | Aanvullende informatie |
Somalia's 1990s commemorative program was a straightforward revenue exercise — the country had no functioning central government following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in 1991, yet coins continued to be contracted through foreign mints and sold directly into the collector market. This piece has no connection to domestic circulation.
The Niña was the smallest of Columbus's three 1492 vessels, a caravel of roughly 60 tons, and survived two Atlantic crossings — the second in 1493 as part of the return expedition.
