Pattern coins from the Central Bank of the Philippines' 1967 series were produced as part of a broader redesign program intended to introduce notable Filipino figures onto the circulating coinage — a deliberate nationalization of iconography that replaced earlier designs rooted in American colonial-era motifs. Juan Luna, the 19th-century painter celebrated for *Spoliarium*, was among the figures evaluated for inclusion. This piece was never adopted for circulation; the 25 sentimos that entered production carried a different design entirely.
