This series was minted during the BSP's broader coinage rationalization following the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas' establishment as an independent institution in 1993, separating it from the Central Bank of the Philippines which had collapsed under the weight of Marcos-era debt obligations. The non-magnetic brass composition distinguishes it from later reformulated issues, a distinction that matters primarily to vending machine operators and collectors sorting by series rather than date.
