The xiezhi (獬豸) is a chimeric creature from Chinese cosmological tradition — a single-horned bovine with the ability to distinguish guilt from innocence, said to gore the dishonest in the presence of a judge. Its association with juridical rectitude made it the emblematic animal of Chinese censors and magistrates for over two millennia, appearing on official insignia through the Qing dynasty.
