The twelfth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, ascended to the throne in December 2001 following the death of Tuanku Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. This coin series was struck during his early reign, continuing Malaysia's long-running practice of issuing wildlife-themed circulating coinage — a policy that has kept the sen series remarkably consistent in format since the 1980s, even as neighboring states moved away from large brass coins entirely due to metal costs.
By the mid-2000s, inflationary pressure was already eroding the 25 sen's practical utility, and the denomination was eventually demonetized in 2008.
