KM#97 belongs to the second Malaysian ringgit series, introduced after Bank Negara's 1989 coinage reform consolidated the country's decimal currency into a cleaner denomination structure. The Agong XII designation refers to Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, who ascended to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong position in December 2001 — the twelfth holder of the office since Malaysia's independence in 1957. His five-year reign coincided with this coin's entire production window.
The Black and Red Broadbill, endemic to the forests of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, was already under pressure from habitat loss by the time this coin entered circulation.
