The Barau Barau series marked Malaysia's first major coinage redesign since the mid-1980s, introduced partly to combat the proliferation of counterfeits in the older copper-nickel issues. Bank Negara replaced the clad composition with brass specifically because the alloy's electromagnetic signature made automated vending and transit validation more reliable. The two-year window of 2004–2005 preceded the full decimalization-era reissue, and these pieces were pulled from production once the smaller, lighter 2005 redesign was finalized.
