This coin commemorates Prince Diponegoro, the Javanese nobleman who led the Java War against Dutch colonial rule from 1825 to 1830 — one of the most costly conflicts the Dutch East Indies ever faced, with casualties estimated in the tens of thousands on both sides. Diponegoro was eventually captured not in battle but through a Dutch-arranged negotiation under a flag of truce, a betrayal that secured his exile to Makassar and later Manado, where he died in 1855.
Issued just three years after Indonesian independence was formally recognized, the choice of Diponegoro as subject was deliberate political positioning by the young republic.
