Nepal Rastra Bank issued this commemorative note to mark the Silver Jubilee of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev's accession to the throne in 1972. Birendra had come to power following the death of his father Mahendra, and by 1997 his reign had survived both the formal end of the Panchayat system in 1990 and Nepal's turbulent shift toward multiparty democracy — though the Maoist insurgency was already gathering force in the western hills.
Thomas De La Rue produced relatively few low-denomination commemorative notes for Nepal across this period, making P#41 a slightly unusual commission. The single watermark security feature reflects the modest production specification for a note intended as much for collectors as for circulation.
