Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, and Benedict XVI was elected just eighteen days later — one of the shortest sede vacante periods in modern history. Commemorative programs worldwide scrambled to respond, and several small issuing authorities rushed Benedict pieces to market before the year was out. Seychelles was among them, operating through the standard licensed commemorative framework that allows nations with no particular connection to the Vatican to issue such coins commercially.
The .925 silver specification and 28.28g weight place this squarely in the Crown-sized commemorative format dominant in the licensed coin trade of that decade.
