Issued as part of a global wave of conservation-themed coinage promoted by the World Wildlife Fund and various development bodies in the mid-1970s, this piece was one of dozens of similar issues produced across Commonwealth nations during that period. Mauritius was a particularly apt participant — the island's ecological history is defined by extinction, most notoriously that of the dodo, driven to oblivion within a century of European contact.
The .500 fineness places it among the lower-silver commemoratives of the decade, a common cost-containment decision as silver prices climbed toward the end of the Bretton Woods era's long aftermath.
