Issued within months of Diana's death in August 1997, this coin belongs to a wave of memorial issues produced by smaller Commonwealth nations — Seychelles among them — that flooded the market that autumn. The Royal Mint itself issued no immediate commemorative, leaving the field to private minting operations contracted through island dependencies and former territories.
The 28.28g sterling silver specification is the Pobjoy Mint house standard of the period, used across dozens of similar commemorative contracts simultaneously.
