Birendra's coronation on February 24, 1975 — delayed nearly three years after his father Mahendra's death in 1972 — was staged with considerable ceremony in Kathmandu, and the Nepalese government commissioned a full suite of commemorative coinage to mark the event. This proof issue was struck in 1974 in anticipation of the coronation, a common practice that allowed distribution to collectors and foreign dignitaries well before the ceremony itself.
KM#838a designates the proof striking, distinguished from the standard circulation commemorative by its mirrored fields.
