The Maldives declared a republic for the first time in 1953, but that experiment lasted less than a year before the sultanate was restored. The republic commemorated here is the second one, proclaimed in 1968 after a referendum ended the sultanate permanently. Thirty years on, the Monetary Authority issued this piece as part of a broader pattern of anniversary coinage common to small island nations building institutional identity through limited commemorative programs.
KM#90 is not scarce in absolute terms, but circulation in the Maldives was limited by the archipelago's dispersed population of under 300,000 at the time of issue.
