The Maldives joined the United Nations in 1965, the same year it gained full independence from British protection — making the two milestones effectively inseparable in the national narrative. This 1996 issue marks the UN's 50th anniversary, a commemoration that prompted dozens of member states to release similar copper-nickel pieces through coordinated coin programs largely organized through the Franklin Mint and comparable distributors.
