Bendery — known in Romanian as Tighina — was the site of some of the fiercest fighting during the 1992 Moldovan-Transnistrian War, a conflict that killed hundreds and displaced tens of thousands within a matter of weeks. Transnistrian forces, backed by elements of the Russian 14th Army, seized full control of the city in late July 1992. The commemorative framing of "liberation" reflects the unrecognized state's official historical narrative, which remains sharply contested by Moldova.
