The International Year of Glacier Preservation was designated by the United Nations General Assembly for 2025, following years of lobbying by glaciologically focused member states. Transnistria — formally the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, unrecognized by the UN itself — routinely participates in UN-themed commemorative programs through its Republican Bank, an arrangement that produces a persistent irony: a state the UN does not recognize issuing coins to mark UN initiatives.
