Transnistria occupies a strip of land between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border that declared independence from Moldova in 1990, triggering a brief but bloody war in 1992. No United Nations member state recognizes it. The Pridnestrovian Republican Bank issues currency for an economy that officially does not exist under international law, yet has done so continuously since 1994 — producing collector and circulation coinage with the institutional confidence of any recognized sovereign mint.
"Year of the Transnistrian People" is a domestic civic designation, one of several themed annual programs the bank has used to anchor collectible issues to state-building symbolism in the absence of external legitimacy.
