Polikarpov designed some of the most important Soviet fighter aircraft of the 1930s, including the I-15 and I-16 — the latter being among the first cantilever monoplane fighters with a retractable undercarriage to see mass production anywhere in the world. Both types fought in Spain during the Civil War and were still in front-line Soviet service when Germany invaded in 1941, by which point they were catastrophically obsolete.
This coin is part of Russia's ongoing "Weapons Designers" series, which has issued dozens of cupronickel 25-rouble pieces honoring Soviet and Russian engineers since 2016.
