| Obverse description | The obverse features the double-headed eagle after the design of artist I. Bilibin, depicted in a heraldic style without a shield on its chest, set within the central field. A circular legend along the upper rim reads «25 РУБЛЕЙ 1996г.» (25 ROUBLES 1996 г.), while the lower rim bears the inscription «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA). Below the eagle, a series of technical inscriptions in small characters denotes the metal purity mark (Au 999), the mint mark of the Leningrad Mint (ЛМД), and the fine gold content (3.11 g). |

Part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing series commemorating Russian ballet, this coin was issued for the centennial of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker — the composer had died in 1893, three years before this anniversary, never having seen the ballet achieve the iconic status it now holds. The premiere at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in 1892 was, by most contemporary accounts, poorly received; critics largely dismissed it, and Tchaikovsky himself was dissatisfied with the production.
