Additional information

The New Hermitage building, completed in 1852 under Nicholas I, was the first purpose-built public museum in Russia — a distinction that mattered enormously to the Tsar, who commissioned Leo von Klenze to design it specifically to house imperial art collections previously accessible only to the court. Nicholas did not live to see this coin, but the 150th anniversary it marks in 2002 fell during a period of aggressive Russian commemorative silver production, with the Central Bank issuing dozens of large-format pieces annually in this weight class.
