This coin commemorates the lifting of the Siege of Leningrad on January 27, 1944, one of the longest and most lethal sieges in recorded military history. The blockade lasted 872 days. Conservative estimates place civilian deaths at around 800,000, most from starvation, though some Russian historians put the figure considerably higher. The Red Army's Operation Iskra in January 1943 broke the land corridor open, but the full siege was not lifted for another year.
The 25-rouble copper-nickel commemorative series issued by the Bank of Russia has become a recurring vehicle for Second World War anniversaries since the mid-2010s, with this piece appearing seventy-five years after the event.
