The Battle of Kulikovo Field in 1380 marked the first significant Russian military defeat of the Mongol-Tatar forces under Mamai, though it did not immediately end the Golden Horde's dominance — Moscow was sacked again just two years later by Khan Tokhtamysh. The victory nonetheless calcified Dmitry Donskoy's political authority and accelerated the consolidation of Muscovite power over rival Russian principalities.
This issue belongs to the Bank of Russia's long-running "Monuments of Architecture and History of Russia" commemorative program. The 2005 release coincided with no particular anniversary of the battle, which was fought on September 8th by the Julian calendar.
